Bangladeshi Army In Control: Nobel Laureate Yunus Khan Likely To Lead Interim Govt
Army-backed Interim Government is likely to be set up in Bangladesh today and Nobel Laureate Yunus is likely to be appointed as top advisor.
Bangladesh's Army Chief will meet student protest leaders as the country awaits the formation of a new Government a day after Hasina resigned and fled the country following a violent uprising against her rule.
Yunus, 84, and his Grameen Bank won the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for work to lift millions out of poverty by granting tiny loans of under $100 to the rural poor of Bangladesh but he was indicted by a court in June on charges of embezzlement that he denied. Hasina is accused of victimizing Yunus.
The student leaders in a video message says they had spoken to Yunus and he agreed to their proposal to take over as top advisor.
Meanwhile, at least 109 people were killed during violent unrest in Bangladesh on Monday.
It marks the deadliest day since protests began in early July, and brings the total number killed to 409.
Sheikh Hasina fled to India after resignation and may seek political asylum in the United Kingdom.
