Bangladeshi Army In Control: Army-Backed Interim Set Up Expected To Be Installed Today

Bangladeshi Army Chief announced an interim set up to run the country after a massive agitation forced Sheikh Hasina to step down as prime minister and flee the country.

The Interim Government is expected to be installed today.

Indian media reports say Sheikh Hasina is in India and may apply for political asylum in the United Kingdom.

Huge crowds of cheering protesters stormed her official residence in the Capital Dhaka, despite a curfew and internet clampdown.

Hasina, who has ruled Bangladesh since 2009, fled the country by helicopter, after protesters stormed her palace in Dhaka.

As protestors entered the house, images showed smashed statue of Hasina's father Sheikh Mujibur Rahma.

Bangladesh's Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman addressed the nation a while ago and announced an interim set up.

Army Chief General Waker-Us-Zaman said in a televised address that Hasina, had left the country and that an interim government would be formed.

Media reports said she had flown in a military helicopter with her sister and was headed to the Eastern Indian State Of West Bengal just across the border. Another report said she was headed to India's Northeastern State of Tripura.
