The Punjab Assembly on Saturday elected Pakistan Muslim league-Nawaz candidates Malik Ahmed Khan and Malik Zaheer Ahmed Channer as the house's speaker and deputy speaker, respectively.

Malik Ahmed secured 224 votes to become the custodian of the house while Channer secured 220.

The election of the speaker, Sunni Ittehad council candidate Ahmad Khan Bhachar bagged 96 votes, while two votes were rejected out of the total 322 ballots cast during the polling.

After newly-elected speaker Malik Ahmed administered the oath to channer as deputy speaker, the assembly session was adjourned till 11:00 am on Monday.

The provincial legislative will elect the Chief Minister in the next session.
