Mexico Butterflies: Population Of Monarch Butterflies Falls 59%, Conservationists Find
Mexico's National Commission Of Protected Natural Areas said, the population of monarch butterflies that arrived in Mexico's forests to hibernate during the 2023-2024 winter season has fallen nearly 60 percent.
The experts attributed the declining population to high temperatures and droughts at breeding sites in Canada and the United States.
The experts also pointed to the use of herbicides and pesticides during their migratory route, which diminish their breeding habitat and affect their health.
Every year, migratory monarchs travel up to 2,000 miles from eastern United States and Canada to spend the winter among the forests of central and Western Mexico.
