U.S. stock indexes clawed back from steep losses to end mixed as investors digested Friday's employment report and prepared for an eventful week of inflation data and bank earnings.

According to preliminary data, the S&P 500 gained 3.64 points to end at 4,108.66 points, while the NASDAQ composite lost 6.10 points, to 12,081.86.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 98.43 points to 33,583.72.
