Australian Open, 4th Round : Elena Rybakina Upset Iga Swiatek, Ostapenko Beats Gauff

World number one Iga Swiatek crashed out of the Australian open tennis with a 6-4 and 6-4 defeat by Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina on rod laver arena.

Kazakhstan's Rybakina advanced to the quarter-finals of the season's opening grand slam for the first time with an impressive display against the misfiring pole.

The reigning French open and U.S. Open Champion Swiatek got off to a rough start, surrendering her opening service game but she fought back to level the scores by the fourth game but Rybakina would break again, clinically punishing the pole's second serve to take the opening set.

The Russia-born right-hander broke Swiatek again at 4-4 in the second set before holding her own serve in convincing fashion to close out the match.

22nd seed Rybakina will face 17th seeded Jelena Ostapenko in the quarter-finals after the Latvian upset 7th seeded American Coco Gauff 7-5 and 6-4.

Ostapenko edged a tight battle in an one hour and 33 minutes on Margaret court arena to reach the quarter-finals at Melbourne park for the first time.

Ostapenko, whose last grand slam quarter-final came at Wimbledon in 2018, has endured some tough injury-hit years since and had never before beaten a player ranked inside the top-10 at the Australian open.
