American Tony Finau ended his five-year wait for a tournament victory after he beat Australian Cameron Smith in the first hole of their playoff to win the Northern Trust and move to the top of the Fedex Cup standings.

Finau went on a birdie-eagle-birdie run on the back nine to finish the round with a six-under 65 and 20-under overall.

Smith missed a 25-foot birdie chance on the 18th for the outright win before a wayward out-of-bounds drive off the first playoff hole ended his chances.

Since winning the Puerto Rico open in 2016, Finau has come close several times to adding a second trophy to his Cabinet with eight runner-up finishes, three of those in playoffs, as well as 11 top three finishes.
