India Tuition Center Fire

At least 20 students aged between 14 to 17 were killed when a fire broke out in a four-storey commercial building in the city of Surat in India.

Some people had jumped off the top floor of the building while trying to escape by climbing down the side, as thick smoke billowed out.

People were seen trying to grab a large banner on the side of the building as they tried to escape.

Most of those killed were students from class 9 to class 12 who had been attending class at a tuition centre housed in the building.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that the cause of the fire was short circuit in an electric box inside the building.
