Cape Epic Race Kicks Off In South Africa
Cannondale's factory racing XC pair Manuel Fumic of Germany and Brazil's Henrique Avancini got off to the perfect start at South Africa's Cape Epic mountain bike race.
The stage begins the eight day event and took the riders across table bay to the iconic table mountain.
The prologue may have been short but it tested the riders with some tough terrain and blazing heat.
Fumic and Avancini won the final stage of Cape Epic last year and picked up where they left of this time, setting the pace early on. They finished 1.36 minutes ahead of Swiss pair Nino Schurter and Matthias Stirnemann.
Samuele Porro and Alexey Medvedev were third.
In the women's event, Germany's Sabine Spitz and South African Robyn de Groot combined to open up a 39 second lead on their nearest rivals.
Stage one is when the cyclists take on over 100 kilometres of gruelling terrain across South Africa's Western Cape.
